MONUMENTS OF THE CAMINO IN NAVARRE

IF YOU NEED FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THESE MONUMENTS, VISIT ULTREIA, THE PILGRIM WELCOME AND INTERPRETATION CENTER OF THE WAY OF SAINT JAMES.

ROYAL COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF RONCESVALLES

Originally located at the Ibañeta Pass, the purpose of this hospital was always to offer assistance and shelter to pilgrims who had just completed the harsh passage of the Pyrenees. However, due to the adverse weather in winter, it was decided to move it to its current location, where the Royal Collegiate Church was founded. This is how and why one of the first Gothic temples on the Iberian Peninsula was built here in the 13th century, following the model of Notre-Dame of Paris.

The main promoter was Sancho VII the Strong, king of Navarre, who participated in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa and ordered to be buried in the collegiate church. He was unusually high for his time, and so his body rests in a 2.30 m long sepulchre. This architectural complex consists of the collegiate church, plus a cloister, the chapter house, the canons' quarters, a museum, a medieval hostel (called “Itzandegia”), the chapels of Santiago and Sancti Spiritus, the mill and the current hostel.

LA RABIA BRIDGE IN ZUBIRI

The very name of the town of Zubiri is a reference to the bridge, as “zubi” means “bridge” in Basque, and “iri/hiri” means “city”, “town” or any inhabited place. This shows how important this construction over the river Arga was since its origin. As regards the name given to the bridge - "Rabies", locals believed that having rabid animals walk in circles around the central pillar of the bridge three times in a row would immediately heal them.

This belief was based on the fact that the relics of Saint Quiteria, patron saint of those ill with rabies, were hidden within the pillar. In any case, Zubiri is the largest town and current capital of the Esteribar valley, through which the Way passes.

MAGDALENA BRIDGE AND PAMPLONA WALLS

The La Rabia bridge allowed pilgrims to cross the river Arga in Zubiri, and the Magdalena bridge serves the same purpose, but this time in Pamplona. After crossing the bridge, pilgrims approach the city’s imposing defensive walls with their bastions, moats and cannon posts, all designed and built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Gate of France with its elegant coats of arms and a drawbridge that is still in operation welcome pilgrims into the capital of Navarre.

This fortified ring closes with a pentagonal citadel dating from 1571, designed by the Italian engineer Giacomo Palearo, in imitation of the citadels of Turin and Antwerp, safe for the fact that none of the other two remains today, so the citadel of Pamplona is the oldest in the world. Nowadays it is also the city’s “green lung”, a park where one can enjoy the greenery and the grass and the many tree species, practice some sports, walk, meet with friends or visit a contemporary art exhibition in one its historic pavilions.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTA MARÍA LA REAL OF PAMPLONA

It is the largest temple in the former Kingdom of Navarre, and as such, it was the venue for the coronation and burial of many monarchs. It consists of one nave and two aisles, a transept, and an apse with an ambulatory, all built in the 15th century. The façade, however, is a neoclassical design by Ventura Rodríguez, one of the best Spanish architects of his time, who directed the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Like Roncesvalles, it consists of several medieval buildings, such as the cloister, the chapter house, the dormitory, the refectory, the kitchen, and the pantry. The cloister in particular stands out for its exquisite architectural, sculptural and decorative quality.

The tracery follows the bright Gothic fashion of the 14th century, and the capitals and keystones display interesting iconographic motifs, such as a calendar depicting the agricultural tasks of the year and passages from the Old and New Testaments. In addition, it has several doorways made by two French sculpture workshops: one following the stylistic trend of northern France and the other one that of the south or “Midi”.

CHAPEL OF VIRGEN DEL CAMINO

Inside the parish church of San Cernin, and almost identical in size to the Gothic temple, is the chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Camino (“Our Lady of the Way”), protector of pilgrims. The carving is from the 12th century, but it stands surrounded by a spectacular Baroque altarpiece full of statues and gilding of great artistic quality.
This chapel - dedicated to the city’s patron saint, is at the beginning of Calle Mayor, and on the other end of the street we find the chapel of the patron saint of Navarre: Saint Firmin, another must-see for pilgrims on their passage through Pamplona.

MONUMENT TO THE CAMINO AT THE EL PERDÓN PASS

Iron sculptural group of pilgrims from different times in history made by Vicente Galbete and sponsored by the “Asociación de Amigos del Camino” of Navarre. The site offers excellent views. The caption in the sculpture reads ‘Donde se cruza el camino del viento con el de las estrellas’ ("Where the path of the wind meets that of the stars").

CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA LA REAL IN SANGÜESA

Dating back from the 12th century, it was declared a National Monument in 1889 and is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Its motley façade, the work of Master Leodegarius and Master of San Juan de la Peña, depicts scenes from the Final Judgment and many hidden messages regarding the Camino.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA DE EUNATE

Without a doubt, one of the most striking churches on the Camino. An archetype of Romanesque architecture, it stands out for its octagonal plan and the cloister arches that surround the temple. The number of different stone-mason marks on the walls seems endless.

ROMANESQUE BRIDGE OF PUENTE LA REINA-GARES

Ordered to be built in the 11th century by Queen Doña Mayor, wife of Sancho III the Great, it is one of the great engineering works on the Camino. The town is named both after the queen and the bridge.

Puente la Reina is the typical example of a Camino town. The town’s plan is based on three parallel streets cut across by narrow streets known as “belenas”, all of it surrounded by walls and towers. The main axis is the Calle Mayor, through which the Jacobean route runs and it will come as no surprise to find there a church dedicated to Saint James. The doorway of the church and the wood carving of Santiago “Beltza” (“black” in Basque – because of the dark colour of the statue) kept inside are noteworthy. The façade and inside of the Church of the Crucifix is also worth the visit.

SAN PEDRO DE LA RÚA IN ESTELLA

This church is the most emblematic building in Estella. The monumental stairs are remarkable, as well as the façade with Arabic-inspired arches, the Romanesque chancel and the finely carved capitals in the cloister. Highlights in Estella include the sculpted façade of the Holy Sepulchre, the façade and interior of the Church of San Miguel Michael, the Royal Palace, Prison Bridge, the Museum of the History of Carlism and the Basilica Church of El Puy, patron saint of the city.

MONASTERY OF IRATXE

CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA IN LOS ARCOS

The church’s beautiful 16th-century bell tower is the first thing in Los Arcos we notice from the distance. The surprisingly richly decorated interior includes frescoes, gilded altarpieces and a Rococo organ. But there is more to this church: behind a small door hides a flamboyant Gothic cloister.

CHURCH OF SANTO SEPULCRO IN TORRES DEL RÍO

Austere yet harmonious 12th-century Romanesque church with a peculiar octagonal plan and a vault with an eight-pointed star design, inspired by the Mosque of Córdoba.

CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA IN VIANA

One of the great gems of Gothic style in Navarre. Tall, slim and elegant. The neat interior, stripped of great decorations, filters the light through tracery (stone patterns) worthy of the best cathedrals in France. Outside, the weight of the walls is supported by flying and regular buttresses. A peculiar mythological programme is displayed on the Renaissance façade, depicting the Twelve Tasks of Hercules. Opposite the main doorway we find a tomb containing the remains of none other than Caesar Borgia.

The monumental ruins of the church of San Pedro complete the town’s wealthy heritage.
