CHURCH OF SAN SATURNINO AND MILESTONES OF THE CAMINO

At the top of the hill presiding over the town of Ventosa stands a masonry construction with a square brick tower. The building has a 16th-century Gothic façade decorated with endemic animals and plants and the site offers an attractive panoramic view. At the exit of the town we find the marker stones of the Camino where tradition has it that if you place on the milestone a stone you have taken with you from your home town or have picked along the Camino, then you can make a wish and your wish will be granted.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA

The Church is arranged as a typical pilgrimage church (a recurrent model along the Way of Saint James with many side chapels and a corridor at the chancel called the ambulatory, which allows circulation without interrupting the religious service). On one side we find the tomb of Santo Domingo, a masterpiece of medieval funerary sculpture.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada was a clergyman who devoted his life to the service of pilgrims, building hospitals, bridges and even a section of the road that runs between Nájera and Redecilla. The connection of the city with the figure of a hen is peculiar, the origin being a miracle attributed to Santo Domingo. Tradition has it that he saved the life of a young German pilgrim who was about to be hanged for robbery. The pilgrim claimed he was innocent and the saint proved this before the sceptical judge of the town by making a roast hen jump back on its legs and start clucking. Hence the famous saying of "Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where the hen clucked after it was roasted."
