FESTIVALS & OTHER EVENTS

  • “Fuero de Nájera”: celebration of the old privilege by which Nájera was granted permission to hold a 'market' every Thursday.
  • “Reino de Nájera”: second half of July. 300 local actors perform the 12th-century “Chronica naiarensis” or “Chronicle of Nájera”.
  • Furniture Fair: Easter.
  • Dancers of Anguiano: July 22nd, Feast of La Magdalena. The dancers dance on wooden stilts.

 

Of pre-Roman origin, it stands on the Najerilla river basin, one of the environmentally best-preserved wildlife sites in Spain.

It was the seat of the Court of the Kingdom of Nájera-Pamplona between the 10th and 11th centuries, causing the diversion of the old track of the Way to Saint James in the direction of this important town.

MUST-SEES

  • Santa María la Real: the monastery was ordered to be built by king García Sánchez III. The works were completed in 1052, becoming then the episcopal headquarters and mausoleum of kings and infants of the Kingdom of Nájera-Pamplona.
  • Museum of Nájera: historical-archaeological museum with items ranging from prehistoric times to the Modern Age.
  • “Alcázar”: medieval defensive system that includes the Cerro de la Mota, crowned by the castle, the walled fort of Malpica, the city walls of Nájera, the fortified bridge and man-made caves within the rock.
