“CABAZO” IN LEBOREIRO

On their way through Leboreiro, pilgrims come across the church of Santa María, in a transitional Romanesque style. Right opposite stands a typical granary, called “cabazo”, shaped like a gigantic basket and used to store corn, like “hórreos” (typical northern granaries).

GOTHIC STONE CROSS AND CHAPEL OF SAN ROQUE IN MELIDE

The current chapel of San Roque was built in 1949 with materials from the demolished churches of San pedro and San Roque. The main doorway is one of the most beautiful of Galician medieval art.
Next to the church is a Gothic stone cross, the oldest in Galicia and the most emblematic of the French Camino. On the obverse there is a crucified Christ in a sitting position and showing the wounds in his hand; on the reverse there is a representation of the Calvary.

CATHEDRAL OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA

The first monumentalization of the tomb of the Apostle, after it was discovered in the 9th century, must have been a simple construction. However, the current cathedral, built in the 11th-12th centuries, became the largest church in Spain. It was built in black granite, with one nave and two aisles, a tribune and a chancel with ambulatory and chapels. Later, in the 18th century, the façade of the Plaza Obradoiro was erected – an impressive Baroque screen that takes the breath away of the pilgrims who, in their last stage, arrive at this monumental square.
