FESTIVALS & OTHER EVENTS

  • Festival in honour of the Virgin of Roncesvalles: September 8th .

The collegiate church of Roncesvalles is a site steeped in history that is also home to one of the first Gothic churches ever built in Spain, inspired by the model of Notre-Dame in Paris. The complex of the collegiate church consists of: chapter house, cloister, canons' quarters, museum, original pilgrim hospital – called “Itzandegia”, and the detached chapels of Saint James and of Sancti Spiritus. This is where the remains of King Sancho VII the Strong rest, as well as those of Charlemagne's rearguard army, including Roland.

  • Basajaunberro Forest Trail: 3.9-km almost flat circular route through a beech forest and cattle pastures. Witchcraft area.
  • Canon Trail: 1.6-km linear route.
  • Monument to Roland: At the top of the Ibañeta Pass is the monument to Roland, a Frankish knight in command of the Carolingian army. The monument stands where, according to tradition, he was defeated by the Vascones in the 8th century. When Charlemagne came to his aid, Roland and his twelve peers had already perished. This fact gave rise to the popular “Chanson de Roland”.
  • Virgin of Santa María de Orreaga: according to tradition, the original carving of the Virgin was hidden by several women during the Muslim invasion. Some time later, it is said that locals in the area repeatedly encountered a deer with light coming from its antlers as they heard a heavenly song. After reporting this to the Bishop of Pamplona, an angel came to the bishop in his dreams, telling him where the Virgin was hidden. This is how the statue was found, although it later disappeared again.
