Public University of Navarre

View of the Public University of Navarre, a classroom block

The Public University of Navarre was created by the Parliament of Navarre in 1987 and has done nothing but grow since then. Its more-than-10,000 students occupy a campus to the south of the city designed by the Navarrese architect Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza.

The campus of the Public University covers some 300,000 square metres. Sáenz de Oiza wished to imitate the form of Paseo Sarasate, including its dimensions: the Library stands in for the Palace of Navarre and the Vice-chancellor’s building, the old Law Courts. It has six departmental buildings, a classroom block, cafeteria, canteens, Vice-chancellor’s building and Administration and Management.

The most striking building on the campus is the library. It has 746 reading posts and 225,000 volumes. The vault filters the light which illuminates the enormous reading and consultation room. The other buildings flank the library.

The gardens on the campus include one hundred tree species from the five continents. Leaving the classroom block and heading towards the Vice-chancellor’s building, you pass the gardens of America (Sequoia, Acacias, Magnolias), Africa (Palm tree, Libyan fir, Atlas cedar) and Australasia (Eucalyptus), set between the three departmental buildings. Opposite, on the other side of the Library, are trees from Asia (Japanese pagoda tree, Turkish filbert) and Europe. There is also a representation of flora from Navarre’s different climatic regions.

The campus is also a small open-air sculpture museum. It houses pieces by modern-day Navarrese sculptors. Bar three indoor installations, the sculptures decorate the gardens and pathways between buildings, and can be admired by anyone visiting the campus.
